Wayne State University’s Developmental
Disabilities Institute (DDI) is pleased to announce Easter Seals Family Support Navigator Academy
for parents of children with disabilites and self advocates. This 2-day
conference will be conducted by staff from the DDI, and is designed to train family members and
self advocates how to discover, access, and use their local services
and supports to strengthen their families. Other national partners in
this endeavor are The Arc of America, the National Association of
Councils on Developmental Disabilities, the Association of University
Centers on Disabilities, the National Disabilities Rights Network, Self
Advocates Becoming Empowered, and the Family Support Center on
Disabilities’ Knowledge and Involvement Network (KIN).
The
Family Support Academy will train Navigators in the philosophy, ethics,
and skills needed to implement a family-centered, empowerment model of
support. At the end of the 2-day Academy, participants will create
action plans that they will implement in their home communities. Academy staff will provide follow along support to assist participants
become proficient in navigation. Participants will build personalized
toolkits of evidence-based practices and skills and complete a
navigation portfolio that will be reviewed by the Academy staff.
Other Information:
The conference is free – a networking reception, breakfast and lunch
are included – but attendees are responsible for their own travel and
hotel expenses. A limited number of stipends are available, on a
first-come basis, for parents and self advocates to cover the cost of
attending the Academy.
