State to Publish List of Lowest Achieving Schools and “Top-to-Bottom” School Rankings
Thursday, August 25, 2011
The Michigan Department of Education will release the list of Michigan's Persistently Lowest Achieving (PLA) Schools on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. PLA schools are identified using a federally-prescribed and federally-approved formula.
These schools must submit within 90 days a detailed school improvement/redesign plan using one of four improvement models—transformation, turnaround, closure, or restart required by the U.S. Department of Education.
Also being released is the "Top-to-Bottom" (highest to lowest) ranking of all schools using MDE's preferred, more comprehensive methodology developed in collaboration with education stakeholders. This list ranks all schools in the state, based on proficiency, student achievement, improvement and achievement gap in all five tested subjects and also includes graduation rate.
