Flanagan Responds to Michigan's Exclusion from the Federal Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant
Tuesday, December 20, 2011
The following is a statement from state Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan, in response to Michigan not being selected to receive a federal Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge Grant:
"I am deeply disappointed for Michigan's children that we did not receive funding for our early childhood learning initiatives. For the past three years, we have raced to the top for help only to have the door shut in our face. This funding would have helped our local schools reach more children in true need of assistance, in a state that has tried to do more with less. Washington needs to support states like Michigan that have great need, a record of change and reform, and committed leaders like our Governor and State Board of Education.
Members in Congress need to step up, invest much more into early childhood programs, and start leading our nation where it has the most impact."
