4/28/08 -- The Helen Keller National Center, through the National Technical Assistance Consortium (NTAC), received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Services, to address deaf/blind transition services through a Person Future Plan (PFP) process. The focus was on how students will transition into the community upon high school graduation.
4/24/08 -- U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings recently announced proposed new regulations to strengthen and clarify the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. The proposed regulations focus on improved accountability and transparency, uniform and disaggregated graduation rates, and improved parental notification for supplemental education services and public school choice.
4/24/08 -- Madonna University (MU), located in Livonia, Michigan, hosts two programs for students with special needs.
4/22/08 -- School districts throughout Michigan celebrate Michigan School Support Staff Week from April 21-25, 2008.
4/22/08 -- The State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan, has announced five state finalists for the 2008-2009 Michigan Teacher of the Year Award. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) uses this award annually to honor Michigan’s exemplary educators.
4/17/08 -- For the third straight year, math scores have risen on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests for the state’s elementary and middle school students.
4/17/08 -- The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has recently developed a wikispace for Personal Curriculum (PC).
4/10/08 -- On April 8, 2008, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) released the statewide results of the Fall 2007 Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests for grades three through eight, including school district and building results.
4/4/08 -- The Michigan Association of Administrators of Special Education (MAASE) is accepting nominations for the annual Beekman Award. The Beekman Award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the administration and leadership of special education programs on the local, regional, or state level.
3/24/08 -- A 13-year-old named Carly is challenging the conventional notions of autism, demonstrating emotional skills that were hidden for years, until one day, a computer helped her reveal to the world what it's like to have her condition.
3/24/08 -- Junior high and high school students can learn more about Michigan courts, and explore legal careers, during two week-long sessions offered by the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center this summer. The Learning Center’s summer offerings are not limited to students. A seminar for K-12 educators will focus on the Michigan judicial system, law-related resources, and curriculum ideas aligned with the new Social Studies Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs).
3/5/08 -- On February 4, 2008, President Bush requested an additional $337 million dollars for students with disabilities under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), for a total of $11.3 billion in fiscal year 2009.
3/5/08 -- The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities (NICHCY) has posted a training module online for the Building the Legacy training curriculum on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), our nation’s special education law.
3/3/08 -- The National Center for Education Statistics has recently released the first report from the third wave of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), which represents a sample of children born in 2001.
2/22/08 -- The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) recently announced that three members of the Michigan State Board of Education have been selected to serve on NASBE panels.
2/20/08 -- The Michigan Promise scholarship provides up to $4,000 to high school graduates for successfully completing two years of postsecondary education beginning with the high school graduating class of 2007.
2/20/08 -- A recent report from the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, a U.S. Department of Education funded nonprofit that evaluates teacher quality, claims that first year teachers seek more creative freedom and opportunities to grow professionally.

2/4/08 -- Information needed to improve the education and outcomes of students with disabilities has been compiled by the U.S. Department of Education in the document: “National Longitudinal Transition Study-2: A Synthesis of Three NLTS2 Reports on Going to School, Youth Achievements and Services and Supports.”
2/4/08 -- Thousands of secondary special education teachers in Michigan likely have been stripped of their status as highly-qualified teachers because of shifting requirements by the U.S. Department of Education. The state is giving those teachers until June 30, 2009 to become highly qualified.
1/28/08 -- Gaining Traction, Gaining Ground, a report from The Education Trust, is a study on how some high schools with high concentrations of low-income or minority students accelerate learning of students entering high school below grade level.
1/24/08 -- The U.S. Department of Education recently unveiled a new Web site to support educators across the nation working towards No Child Left Behind’s goal of having every student proficient in reading and math by 2014. “Doing What Works” provides an online library of resources for teaching practices that have proven to be effective.
1/24/08 -- The Birth to Five Policy Alliance has launched a new Web site geared toward policymakers, business leaders, and community leaders interested in improving the odds for young children at risk.
1/21/08 -- The Michigan Department of Education, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, has scheduled a series of Personal Curriculum webinars. Each webinar will focus on a specific topic regarding Personal Curriculum.
1/21/08 -- The Michigan Department of Education has developed a new partnership with the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), and AdvancED, the parent organization of NCA. Through AdvancED, a new school improvement Web site has been developed for use by schools as well as local and intermediate school districts in Michigan.
1/17/08 -- Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology (DO-IT) has created training materials on making science and computer technology accessible to individuals with sensory impairments.
1/17/08 -- The Center for Educational Networking (CEN) has been named a winner in the annual Michigan School Public Relations Association (MSPRA) Communications Contest. CEN received an award of Commendable in the Publication category for the entry, “Leading Change.”
1/15/08 -- Current Michigan Teacher of the Year June Teisan has been named one of four finalists for the nation’s top teaching honor—National Teacher of the Year.
1/8/08 -- The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities (NICHCY) has released its latest Evidence for Education brief, entitled Assessment and Accommodations. This publication provides insight into proper assessment techniques and appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.
12/5/07 -- At the latest State Board of Education meeting, Bruce Umpstead, Director of the Office of Educational Technology, announced that Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan received the State Education Technology Directors’ Association (SETDA) Federal and State Policy Maker Award.
12/3/07 -- The percentage of Michigan high schools not making adequate yearly progress (AYP) this past year increased by over nine percent, according to the Michigan Department of Education.
11/29/07 -- The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) recently released two documents providing supporting materials, examples, and guidelines to the use of the personal curriculum (PC) modification. The PC is a documented process that modifies certain requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC).
11/15/07 -- Champions for Inclusive Communities (ChampionsInC) supports states and communities implementing community-based systems of services and supports for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families.
9/6/07 -- As Michigan children head back to the classroom this fall, more of them are returning to elementary and middle schools that are meeting state and federal academic goals, the Michigan Department of Education reports.
