The ASD Planning Workgroup is a statewide initiative aimed at addressing the needs of children 0-6 with ASD and their families. On June 20, 2005, Michigan's Human Services Directors gave approval for representatives from the Departments of Community Health, Education and Human Services to collaborate with parents of children with ASD, advocacy groups and experts, to engage in a planning process that will address the needs of children 0-6 with ASD and their families.
The ASD Planning Workgroup's task is to engage in a planning process that will produce recommendations to assure appropriate screening to identify children with ASD and to assure appropriate assessment, diagnosis and treatment/interventions for children, ages 0-6, with ASD, making available to parents choice of practices that are evidence based and effective, based on the consensus of experts, including clinicians and parents. The recommendations will be conveyed to the Human Services Directors by September 2006.
The recommendations will reflect the underlying assumptions:
- We believe that with supports and services children with ASD can live successfully at home with their families.
- We believe that early identification and intervention leads to better outcomes for children with ASD.
- We believe that family centered planning will include services and supports across all life domains.
- We believe that intensive, evidenced base and effective practices lead to better results for children and families.
- We believe that families, health providers, education, public agencies and commercial insurance have a shared responsibility for supportive services and interventions for children with ASD.
- We believe that harmony among and between partners promotes positive outcomes for children and families.
The recommendations will reflect the following values:
- We value a family centered planning approach that is responsive and accountable to family's needs and preferences.
- We value each family's culture, language, customs and beliefs.
- We value children and families receiving individualized and coordinated services in their home and communities.
- We value family choice of practices that are evidenced based and effective, based on the consensus of experts, including clinicians and parents.
- We value practices that include evaluation and identify outcomes.
