Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can teachers apply for the Interdisciplinary Certificate in Autism?

A. Yes. Many general and special education teachers have a particular interest in autism and undertake continuing education to advance their knowledge and skills in this area. Teachers who meet the criteria for application will be eligible for the certificate.

Q. Is the ICA the same as a teaching endorsement in autism?

A. No. A teaching endorsement is awarded only to certified teachers and requires the completion of an approved university course of study.

Q. If I possess the ICA, will I be able to take a teaching position in a classroom program for students with autism or become approved as a teacher consultant in the area of autism?

A. No. Only persons who possess a teaching certificate with an endorsement in autism are approved for these roles.

Q. If I undertake university coursework in pursuit of qualifying for the certificate, can I apply that coursework toward a teaching endorsement in autism?

A. Courses taken in pursuit of the certificate may or may not apply to a teaching endorsement in autism or to a degree in special education. The university with whom you plan the course of study must determine which courses apply.
