Visual Impairment
This is a list of web sites which may be useful to those who have interests in products/issues dealt with by people who are blind or visually impaired.
- Blind World Magazine
Blind World Magazine offers news items related to people who are blind or visually impaired. Topics such as national, international, people and places, guide dog and service animals, and medical news and research are displayed.
- JFW Lite
Offers links to sites, and downloads of both public domain, and commercial programs/utilities which work well with the JAWS for Windows screen reading program, also provides scripts designed to allow JAWS to be used effectively with many applications. Also offers helpful hints to assist in getting these programs/utilities running.
- ACB Radio
ACB Radio offers a wealth of information. In the "on demand" section of the site, streaming audio programs related to various aspects of blindness and visual impairment may be accessed. "Main Menu" deals with assistive technology from a "blindness perspective".
- Access Technology Institute
Offers fee-based training on various Microsoft applications, self-paced study courses. There are also hints on how to configure applications to work well with screen readers such as JAWS or Window-Eyes.
- AccessWorld
AccessWorld is a free, on-line publication which provides reviews and evaluations of assistive technology products for people who are blind or visually impaired. It is a bi-monthly magazine, with "AccessWorld extras" emailed to subscribers in the off-months.
- Braille Research Institute
Braille Research Institute promotes the reading of braille by providing electronic braille versions of books. These are available for on-line reading or download for free. You need computer equipped with a refreshable braille display to read them online, or a PDA which can accommodate formatted braille files for reding downloaded titles.
- Library of Congress Web-Braille
The Web-Braille feature is available to patrons of the Library of Congress, national Library Service. You need to obtain a username and password from your cooperating library, then you may download electronic braille books and magazines for reading on a PDA which supports formatted braille files, or using a computer and screen reader equipped with a refreshable braille display.
- BookShare
BookShare is a subscription and fee-based organization which provides access to books in electronic braille format, and "DAISY" audio format to subscribers who cannot access printed materials. Both copyrighted, and public domain titles are available.
