MDE-LIO just launched a new program to partner with Intermediate School Districts in order to assist in addressing the unique need of providing independent living skills to students with a visual impairment. A partnership in program development, implementation and documentation of skills will heighten awareness and augment skill development for students with a visual impairment.
The goal is to develop a program designed to meet broad and individual needs for now and in the future. It will be a comprehensive approach to
providing instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum for Students with a Visual Impairment in the area of independent living skills.
The ILS Team from MDE-LIO comprised of MDE staff, educators, parents and consumers from around the state will be the lead in providing the technical assistance. The impetus is to create a collaborative team process with the parents and local educators in order for them to continue the process in their area for many years to come. We are excited about our new partnership with Kent Intermediate Schools and look forward to expanding the program in the future.
