Regional Braille Classes

Who is this class for?

This is a 6 or 16 week course for teachers (VI and general education), paraprofessionals and parents who are involved with children who are Braille readers. The class is designed to enhance or develop knowledge and skills of the Literary Braille Code. This course would also be useful to adults and/or college students who are supporting students in utilizing their Braille skills.

What do you need to know about Braille before taking this class?

This class is designed for anyone who has no knowledge (or very little knowledge) of the Literary Braille Code and would like to learn the code or brush up on their skills.

What is the purpose of this class?

This course has three primary purposes.

  1. To develop and/or enhance your knowledge and skills of how to read, write, and understand the rules that govern the Literary Braille Code
  2. Introduction to the Nemeth Code
  3. To gain information on resources and tools used in teaching Braille.

  • A resource file that consists of helpful Websites, addresses, and phone numbers of catalogs that sell Braille items, Braille Code sheets, Nemeth reference sheets, etc.
  • Braille handouts
  • A project that will assist you in your endeavor to continue to provide support to Braille readers.
  • A certificate stating that you have successfully completed the Braille course (16 week course).

What is the length of this class?

The regional Braille classes are 6 or 16 weeks. For specific details concerning the content of the class, download the Braille class syllabus.

Who can I contact if I have questions following the class?

Once you have completed the class and have questions, you can contact Collette Bauman, Supervisor and Braille Class Coordinator.

How many people are needed to schedule a class in my area?

Four people need to register for classes in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties. In all other areas of the state there is a minimum requirement of two people to register for the class.

How much does the class cost?

The class is $50 for teachers, paraprofessionals, and other school personnel. The cost is $25 for parents and college students. Scholarships are available for family members who meet the financial need criteria. Please visit our scholarship page for more information regarding the scholarships. The cost does include all materials and 32 hours of instruction.

How do I get a class scheduled in my area?

If you have the minimum number of participants required to hold the class complete the interest form. If you would like a class in your area and do not have the minimum number please complete the interest form and LIO staff will look for other people in your area to take the class.

Where will the class be held?

After the minimum number of participants has registered for a class in your area, staff from MDE-LIO will make arrangements for a room in your area for the class to be held. All the equipment and books will be provided. Room requirements include tables, chairs, and electricity.

Are Michigan State Board of Education CEU’s or ACVREP Credits available?

SBE CEU's will be available upon request. When SBE CEUs are requested there will be a 45-day delay in providing the class. The delay is required by the Department of Education to process the request for SB-CEU's.

ACVREP credits are available upon request. There will be an approximately a 30 day delay in providing the class due to the processing of the request for credits from ACVREP. There will be an additional fee of $15.00 to your registration for the ACVREP credits.
