Learning
environments need to promote and support the development
of social competence for ALL children. Learning environments
for young children include the home, preschool, childcare,
and other community settings. Positive Behavior Support
(PBS) for young children provides a framework for defining
and addressing a behavior concern from within the learning
environment rather than just from within the child. In
a PBS approach, thinking that The child has a problem
replaces thinking that The child is a problem.
The goals of PBS for young children are to:
support age-appropriate development, maintain enrollment
of young children in early care and educational settings,
avoid expulsion, promote school readiness, and create
environments that ensure early learning. PBS for young
children team training targets community-based teams of
two to three persons who are representative of the following
stakeholder groups: Head Start, Child Find, and Early
On® coordinators; early childhood program (formerly
PPI) consultants/teachers; parents of young children;
community agencies serving young children; early care
and education agency directors/teachers; and All Student
Achieve Program-Parent Involvement and Education (ASAP-PIE)
grant recipients.
