Michigan Department of Education, Low Incidence Outreach
The Michigan Department of Education, Low Incidence Outreach (MDE-LIO) supports the needs of local and intermediate school districts and public school academies in improving the quality of education for students who have visual impairments and for students who are either deaf or hard of hearing.
Formerly known as the Michigan School for the Blind Low Incidence Outreach program, MDE-LIO is the Michigan depository for educational materials produced by American Printing House for the Blind. MDE-LIO also produces enlarged print and Braille books, provides consultation around specific student needs, and conducts sign language proficiency interviews. MDE-LIO operates an extensive loan library that includes professional reference materials and children’s fiction, in large print and in Braille.
MDE-LIO also runs Camp Tuhsmeheta, an educational and recreation program.
